Happy Tuesday everyone! Last week at this time I was laying on the couch….ready to go to the hospital! Tonight I am here at home with Madison in bed and little Miss Peyton still at the St. Paul Children’s Hospital. It is hard to not have her home…but I know she will be home before we know it!!
It was confirmed to us on Sunday that she has Hirschsprung’s disease, so the surgery was a “go” on Monday! We arrived at the hospital about 9am…they had her on the schedule for 11:30 am, but of course…nothing is ever on schedule! They came down to her room about 12noon to bring her up for pre-op. We met with the surgeon and the nurses and we were ready to let our little girl go into the big operating room. Surprisingly, Pat and I did really well with saying bye to her as they wheeled her off- it was both of our mom’s that were crying. We went to the family waiting room—by this time it was about 12:30…let the surgery begin. The surgeon told us it could be anywhere from 1 hrs to 3 or 4 hrs….
We sat in the waiting room, played cards, looked thru magazines and talked. Before we knew it…it was about 2pm and Dr. Valusek walked in….it was GREAT to see her, especially with a smile on her face! She gave us the great news….Peyton was done with surgery! She sat and talked to us for a good 15 minutes and explained what she did to our little one and how well she tolerated everything! It was so great to hear that!
We headed back up to the NICU to see the little butter bean. It was not the most comforting thing to see your 5 day old on a ventilator- but we knew it was VERY temporary. She was off the ventilator later that evening and breathing on her own!
Since Peyton is so small the surgeon was not able to re-attach her intestine to her bottom. In about 3 months- we will have to take her back to the cities for a second surgery.
I think one of my 1st questions to the MD was “when can we go home?” the answer…when she is eating and pooping! So, that is our next mission. The nurses are waiting for her to poop, and then she will start getting some breast milk! YAY for food! That is about it for the updates today….we will root her on tomorrow…..
